Waipawa School and District High School 150 year celebrations

Back in 1862 Waipawa school opened its doors to educate the children of the town. Lesson were held in the Anglican church until there was enough money raised to build a purpose built school on the corner of Waverly and Kennilworth streets in 1865.

In school grew and more classrooms were added then in 1908 the District High school was opened next door.

In 1938 the new primary school buildings opened in Harker Street.

Then in 1953 a new Secondary school built in front of Primary School in Harker Street.

Moving ahead in time – 150 years after the school was first opened Waipawa school and
District High School are celebrating turning 150 years old!
