Hi Jan
I came across your site on Waipawa this morning while looking for family history
and I found it very interesting and informative but was even more thrilled when
I came across the Arrow family name.
I am interested to find out any information I can about Katherine [Kate] Arrow
and her
family or possibly a photo of the family. Or a photo of their wedding? A
long shot, I know but I thought there maybe something hiding in an attic
or someone you know may have a contact or some snippets. Following is a
snippet from P.C.A writings I have picked up it reads:
Rev. Philip Cuthbert Anderson married Katherine (Kate) Arrow on 11 Feb 1874 by
Rev. Samuel Williams at 11am in the little church in Waipawa. Alice and
Nellie were bridesmaids and Charlie Chapman my best man all went off very
happily. Breakfast at Mrs Arrows.
I am a Great Granddaughter of Rev. Philip C. Anderson, Kate was a younger sister
of Dr Richard Todds wife, Annie Mary [Arrow]. Kate often visited her
Sister before and after she was married to Rev. P.C. Anderson. They lived in
Taradale when Philip became the Reverend at All Saints Taradale.
After browsing your website this morning I forwarded the contact across to my
cousin Naomi in Sydney before I went off to work. We both hope that you may have
some time to reply to us both.

I read with interest your article on "The Pines "
While I have much information on my family history my missing Piece is my great
grandmother Kate Arrow sister of Annie Arrow Todd .
Kate was born in Waipawa 2nd June 1855... Kate was the third daughter of Henry
Arrow of Waipawa
Kate married my great grandfather Reverend Phillip Cuthbert Anderson 11th
February 1874 at Waipawa by Rev Samuel Williams .
Kate & Phillip moved to Scone New South Walesdue to Kates failing health where
she died in Sparkes Creek Scone on 15th May 1886 she was only 31 years old
Kate is buried in Scone New South Wales Australia .
Grandfather kept comprehensive diaries some 47 volumes during his life which
tells of his life & some photo's but amongst all of these I have no photo of
Kate or very much information about her ...only what grandfather writes .
Grandfather was a ordained a minister in New Zealand & worked for many
years in Hawkes Bay Napier & many other parishes during his time in New Zealand
I was wondering if you could advise me as where I might write to gain more
information on Kate & the Arrow family & hopefully a photo of Kate .
I am happy to share the information I have gained from Grandfather's diaries &
Reminiscences & also the photo's I have of him & his family ....
My husband & I are looking to coming over to New Zealand It sounds like 2010 is
the year !!!

Hi Brenda and Naomi,
I am sorry you had a bit of problem with the email. I'll have to get the email
address checked out - although it did get through in the end- so I'm not sure
what the problem was.
Well - the Arrows... a pretty big name in Waipawa back in those early days,
along with the Rathbones of course.
William Rathbone married Lissie Arrow(20years his junior and only 17 when she
married) who was Henry Arrow's second daughter.
Henry's eldest daughter being Annie who married Dr Todd.
But off-hand I hadn't heard of their sister Kate. So it will be interesting if
we can find something for you.- a photo would be excellent!
I am fairly certain there are a few photos of the Arrows (Henry Arrow and maybe
a daughter or two???) in the Museum, so I will go down to the museum a little
later on and ask Rosheen.
Unfortunately I am waiting this afternoon for someone to drop off some photos to
me for another waipawa.com enquiry I'm working on, AND I'm running around in a
mild panic getting ready for "the Sculptor of the Year" competition up in
Auckland (which I leave to set up my artwork tomorrow). I don't really know if
I'm coming or going at the moment!
Anyway... I'll ask Rosheen if she has anything down at the Museum, and if not
I'll try asking a friend who is an Arrow/Rathbone descendant if she has anything
- I know she's a slightly different branch - but she shares a common ancester
with you, being Henry Arrow - and she might have some photos or family stories?
Its worth a try anyway...
Sorry I can't be too much help right now - but I promise when things settle down
after this exhibition I will turn my brain on and get on to it.

flat out getting ready to go to Auckland tomorrow.
I am fairly sure that the Museum has got some photos of the Arrow family- I
think I might have even framed one or two down the hallway down there...
Although it might be my memory playing tricks on me.

But I was just letting you know that Henry had 8 daughters
Annie m Todd, Lizzie m Rathbone, Kate m Anderson,Alice m Curtis, Nellie
(Ellen) m Hitchings, Florence m Winter(Wynter?) Amy m Hamlin,
Maude m Whitelaw. Altogetherhe had 14 children although I think a
couple died early.
No rush - just when you've got your feet back down on the ground will be
great.
GOOD LUCK WITH THE SCULPTOR OF THE YEAR your work looks absolutely stunning on
the website Awesome in fact.

Sorry its taken me so long to get back to you, but since I've got back from the
sculptor of the year thing I've been rushing around trying to catch up on work,
Waipawa's 150th celebrations stuff etc... and yesterday I finally had a little
time to myself and I was sending off some of the internet enquiries I've been
working on recently to get posted on the
www.waipawa.com website - and I suddenly realized I hadn't
caught up with you.
Did the Museum find anything for you?
If they have, I would really appreciate you sending me a copy of what they sent
you so I could include this on the website too.
I was thinking I'd give my friend a ring and see if they have any photos of
Henry Arrow and his family (in particular Kate) - but she may not have anything
- and it maybe more Rathbone related since she is descended from that sister.
Apparently they are having a Rathbone family reunion next year - so who knows -
they may have some photos etc at their fingertips?
Hopefully I'll turn up something.
I think Naomi said that she was happy to share some information she gained
from your grandfather's diaries... and some photos. I would love to include some
of that on the website too, as I have found that sometimes if other branches of
your families see it, they will add some of what they have too and it mushrooms
into a more complete story.
Unfortunately I seem to have lost Naomi's email address - so could you forward
this on to her?
As for the problems you've had with my email address - I'm not sure what's going
on, as I haven't had anyone else tell me about this problem. Sometimes people

Great to hear from you I was only thinking of emailing you this morning myself
to let you know that Rosheen did have a photo of Kate taken on Kate's 18th
Birthday I think..

Anderson taken in Christchurch in 1875 while attending a Synod.
We would love you to contact the Rathbone's and see if they have any other
photo's that would be great, especially if there was a family one of all the
older sisters together along
with anything else. Naomi would be better to put together some snippets re
Kate as she has all the diaries of P.C. I have the Reminiscences and will go
through those, so I will forward your email and send her this one as well so she

Hi Brenda,
I gave Rosie a ring this morning to see if she had any Arrow info - but nobody
was at home, so I'll try again tomorrow.
I'm hoping that the Pines will be part of a guided walk around historic homes in
Waipawa (my house will probably be part of it too) and last week Margaret (our
local historian) and I went around the St Peter's churchyard and the newer town
cemetery to try and work out a cemetery walk of some of the early notable
identities in Waipawa. We haven't worked it all out yet - but I'll keep you in
touch as to what's happening when.
I just remembered Mum telling me about a little snippet she had of Mrs Henry
Arrow - a letter she wrote to the Waipawa Mail way back in Waipawa's early days
- It was actually directed in my family's direction(and she obviously didn't
think much of the Bibby's) - but I think its a bit of a laugh now.
I'll see if Mum can dig it out and send you a copy.
Its good to have touched base again.

she has no photos of Lissie, Kate or any of the other sisters - nor of their
father Henry either. But she did say she would ask around her family and

I maybe able to help you and Rosie out, I made some enquiries a few years back
by just writing to Arrow family's from the phone book. A reply came back
to me with the following a title of a Book
"Abott's-Ford" A History of Waipawa by Margaret A Gray {ISBN
0-473-00846-7}
This book has a small photo of Henry & Elizabeth Arrow on a Street Map & Census
of Waipawa done by Henry in 1867. The original was sighted by him many
years ago in the Council Buildings but he thinks that maybe it would now be in
the Waipawa Museum.
Henry was School Master {1873} and later {possibly 1892} Town Clerk of Waipawa.
For a short time he was Deputy Registrar of Births, Deaths & Marriages, a Court
Clerk and a Bailiff.
Elizabeth died 3 July 1893 .......[is she buried in Waipawa???]
Henry died 27 May 1902 ...... he is buried
in St Peters Cemetery [is there a headstone]
also one of their children Ernest Barnham Arrow DOB: 1870 DOD: 1870
[maybe there as well]
I am still in contact with him and will check if Ok to forward you another photo
and the tree he sent me. He is a descendant of Percy Barnham Arrow the
youngest son of Henry and Elizabeth.
Hope Rosie is able to get a look at a copy. I haven't found a copy yet.
But somewhere I do have some photo's he forwarded along with Annie Mary & Dr
Todd and Lizzie and William Rathbone.
Lets hope some of the family members may have some photo's hidden away. I
know Philip C Anderson saw a family Album with a photo of Katie and her Mum in
it {not sure how old she was though} just before they were married. [1873-74]

Hi again Brenda and Naomi,
I told you in an earlier email that my mum had a letter that Mrs Henry Arrow
wrote about the terrible Bibbys (my great, great grandparents) and their store.
Well I was wrong. It wasn't Mrs Arrow. It was Henry himself.
And yesterday Mum found the old Waipawa Mail (July 20 1883) and brought it over
and I've scanned it. Unfortunately the letter was split over two pages and the
paper is old and so has a few little holes and folds in it, making some of it
hard to read.
But here it is...
I don't quite understand everything Henry is getting at - especially at the
beginning of the article - but defiantly when you get on to the second page you
can see him making quite pointed remarks about 'the little store ... which was
pulled down to make room for a larger one' is definitely the Bibby store...
'which caused all the other boundaries of the sections of Ruataniwha Road to
become disorganized.'
Gee - those Bibby's - thought they owned the place - building big huge buildings
or 'palaces' all over the place - obviously with disregard to boundaries - Its
quite a laugh really.
My great, great Grandfather obviously upset Henry Arrow - and probably their
paths crossed quite regularly.
Edward Bibby was Chairman of the Waipawa School Board for many years (and was
instrumental in getting a school built in Waipawa)... and Henry was a Teacher
there.
Edward Bibby was on the Roads Board and also went on to be the first Chairman of
the Waipawa Town Board, and then later was Chairman of the Waipawa County
Council - and you tell me Henry was the Town Clerk.
I wonder if they ever got on?
Anyway just thought you might be interested in this letter.

Great to receive your email... Thankyou so much for sharing with Brenda & I
We are both very keen family History researchers .... .
I have just recently found the final resting Place of Kate Anderson nee
ARROW (My great Grandmother )
Nick & I will going up in a few weeks to place a plaqued cross onto her grave &
plant a rose .
During my research Kate has always been my passion
.
Her life, with REV Phillip Cuthbert ANDERSON for one so young was quite an
arduous one .
Phillip was a very self indulgent man .. of many talents & a great
intellect & a short fuse to boot !!!

I am lucky to have Great Grandfather's diaries from 1865 until his death in
Sydney in 1932 at age 84 As well as his Remieniscences ... which fills the gaps
the diaries omit
Together he and Kate lead a hard but full life for her short life dying in
Sparkes Creek at age 31 .
If we have anything we can help you with we to are happy to share .
Nick & I are looking forward to coming over in February for the 150 years
celebrations ...

Subject: Kate Arrow/150th celebrations
Hi Naomi,
I would love to hear about Kate's life with her husband. It is sad that she died
so young.
I am still hoping that we will find more on her earlier life here in Waipawa.
I'm getting quite excited about Waipawa's 150th celebrations in 2010 too. The
main day you need to aim for is February the 13th. This is the day when most of
the celebrations are going to be happening.
Starting off with a Grand Parade. There are going to be vintage and classic cars
and motorbikes, horsedrawn wagons, floats, people dressed in costume of Waipawa
through the ages and bands etc... I'm not sure of the route the parade is taking
yet - but its going to end up at Coronation Park (which is the rugby park
opposite the Pines. Then there is going to be an old fashioned gala day - with
olden day events such as egg and spoon races, sack races, tug of war etc and
stalls too.
The Museum is organising showings of some historic short films taken by one of
Waipawa's film-makers of the past, and other films showing episodes of Waipawa's
history.
And in the evening we're having the unveiling of our new band rotunda and
children's playground down at our other park - ending up with a free community
concert (using the band rotunda) where people can relax and enjoy a picnic - or
get up and dance the evening away.
There are going to be other events throughout the year - sporting, cultural and
rural events - including a big street cycle race... and a Ball in October.
We are also hoping to have a guided walk around some of our historic homes
(including the Pines and probably my place amongst others), and a guided
cemetery walk too -although the dates for these have not been set yet.
I hope you can make it - I think its going to be a lot of fun

I will go through the diaries & put together what I can ....On Kate & her life
...
WE have already booked time off work for that period (13th Feb 2010) so as to be
in Waipawa for the Celebrations my cousin Brenda & her husband are coming up to
join us for a few days & then we will return to Christchurch.
Phillip Cuthbert Anderson also has a big association with All Saints Church at
Taradale Napier .
One of his children is buried there & Phillip designed & oversited the building
of the original church & was Minister there for a period .
The celebrations sound like they will be wonderful ... to come over for a
holiday was great but to now be part of historical celebrations is a bonus ....
The films will be most interesting ... connecting the History is such a
wonderful thing .
I hope to be able to at least see "The Pines" while in Waipawa ... but to be
able to wander the grounds & see part of our family history would be absolutely
wonderful .
We will be there Jan ... We look forward to meeting you & thankyou again for
your generosity in sharing
