Cold Duck Rally

Every year on the first weekend of May duck shooting season starts in New Zealand….

And on the Second weekend in May ‘The Cold Duck Rally’ is held just out of Waipawa at Tamamu!

If you have a motorbike….

Big or…

Small… (yes – even scooters!!!!)

Old…. or new…. maybe this is the thing for you.

Sounds fun anyway.

Below is an article from CHB Mail 8/5/07

Its time again for the Waipawa Motor cycle Club’s annual big event, the Cold Duck Rally, now in its 16th year of running.

The Cold Duck rally has become one of the premier events on the motorcycling calendar in NZ.

This year we will see the CHB motor cycle population multiply many times over, as enthusiasts from all over the country, and even overseas, gather at the club’s Tamamu rally site.

This is where acres of leather and lace meet, mingle, have a little fun and frolic in what is usually the last of the Indian summer weather.

With the help of enthusiastic locals the huge marquee rises mid week, allowing installation of Noise Productions’ 20,000 watt sound systems, cameras and big screen, which enhance the onstage performances for those happier to stay back from the stage.

Friday evening entertainment opens with newcomers, Blunt, playing their mix of classic rock and punk sounds, followed by locals F.M, who need no introduction.

On Saturday morning the bikes from site assemble for a 10am Thunder Ride through the main street of Waipawa.

The 80 -100 bikes then park and show, in the Centre Court, whilst the Waipawa Chamber of Commerce provide a warming cup of soup, deliberate and present a lucky spot prize to one of the participants.

During this time the first cards of the annual Poker Run are drawn at Skinny Mulligans. This is a free poker run, open to anyone who is intending heading out to the site – simply follow the map, drawing cards, at your own pace, last cards drawn on site at 3pm.

By then the usual motorcycle games are under way, also other games open to all involving a steady hand and electricity, courtesy of the Gallagher man.

All events, games, prizes etc have once again been provided by the clubs ever wonderful and loyal sponsors, without whom this iconic event would never be possible.

Not enough can be said for those firms and individuals, prepared to look a little outside the square and invest a little promotion of the CHB.

Full on site catering for most every taste at the Road Kill Café, fish n chips, hot dogs, to several specialties available.

The Bikers Arms caters for the thirst at super reasonable rates, to avoid any possibility of broken glass problems.

Free tea and coffee also the real stuff from ‘professionals’, and eftpos is available.

Saturday evening, as the sun drifts away, along with the intoxicating burn out aromas is where the evening entertainment kicks off. Here, it becomes adult only, with local band Central X leading the charge.

During the mid evening band change over, regular biker entertainment resumes, Tattoo, wet tee shirt etc…

On completion (would it be a ‘Cold Duck’ without them?) F.M rock the crowd and the night right out of there.

Mailed pre paid tickets sales have now closed. There may be a few left at the Patangata Tavern for locals, quickly, rush in and see Jude.

Gate sales are available from Friday on, these do not include a Cold Duck badge. A family day pass is available for those wanting to take the kids out for a Saturday, but you will need to take them home come evening, which can not be G rated.

Also, a day pass for motorcyclists intending to spend only a few hours in the afternoon, catching up, but your bike will be taken hostage. Sorry parents this won’t work with the kids.

There is no car parking on site, there may be a short walk involved.

Waipawa MC welcomes you all. Look forward to seeing you there, till then, keep the sunny side up.
